Build with Sidekick

Set up products and pages with Sidekick

Let Sidekick do the typing in your admin: create a product field, fill in details, add a badge to a set of products, and start a team page. With what it did in our tests, step by step.

WhereSidekick in your Shopify admin, on the page you want to change.

These are the setup jobs from Set up your store, done by asking. Each one shows the prompt we used, what Sidekick did, and what's left for you. Change the names and words to your own.

Create a product field

Open Settings, Metafields and metaobjects, Products, then ask:

Shopify admin

Fill in the Add definition form for me: name it Flavor notes and set the type to Single line text.

Sidekick opens the form and fills it in. You click Save.

The Add product metafield definition form filled in by Sidekick with the name Flavor notes and the type Single line text
1: What Sidekick filled in. 2: The name. 3: The type. 4: Click Save to create the field.

If you just ask it to create the field, Sidekick may answer that it can't, and give you the steps and a link instead. Ask again with "fill in the form for me".

Sidekick replying that it can't create metafield definitions directly, with steps and a Navigate to Product Metafields link
1: Sidekick's answer when asked to create the field outright. The link takes you to the right page.
TipFor the fields Manifest reads by itself, say the exact name and ask for a list: "Name it Badges, type Single line text, and switch it to a list of values." Its key must be custom.badges. See Show different details on each product.

Fill in details on a product

Open the product, or name it, and ask:

Shopify admin, on a product

Set the Terrain metafield to Freestyle and the Warranty metafield to 2-year warranty on The Minimal Snowboard.

  1. Sidekick fills the fields in and highlights them in purple.
  2. Check them, then click Save at the top.
The Warranty and Terrain fields filled in by Sidekick in purple, with Save at the top
1: What Sidekick changed. 2: The filled-in fields. 3: Save.

The same works for Shopify's standard Subtitle field:

Shopify admin, on a product

Write a subtitle for this product in under 70 characters, in a calm, plain tone, and put it in the Product subtitle field.

Read it before you save. It shows under the title on the product page.

The same detail on several products

Shopify admin

Add the badge New to the Badges metafield on every product whose title starts with The Collection Snowboard, but only if it isn't already there.

Sidekick working through products one by one, with the first one's Badges field changed and Save at the top
1: Sidekick works through the products one at a time. 2: Save each one as it goes.
  • Sidekick finds the products, then changes them one at a time. Save each one when it asks.
  • Check lists for doubles. In one test Sidekick added New to a product that already had it. Manifest shows each badge once anyway, but it's tidier without.
  • For dozens or hundreds of products, Shopify's bulk editor is quicker: in Products, tick the products, click Bulk edit, and add the field as a column.

Start a team page

Shopify admin

Create a page called Jamie Chen that uses the profile template. Write two short paragraphs about Jamie, our park rider who tests every freestyle board.

A new page filled in by Sidekick with the title Jamie Chen, two paragraphs of text and the profile template
1: The title. 2: The text Sidekick wrote. 3: The profile template.

What's left for you:

  1. Fill in the page fields under Metafields: Portrait, Role, Introduction and Picks. Sidekick couldn't set these in our tests.
  2. The page starts Hidden. Set Visibility to Visible when it's ready.
  3. Save. See Team pages and profiles for how the page looks and the Team section that links to it.
TipUnder Template you may see "Template not available in current theme". That only means Manifest isn't your published theme yet. The page keeps the profile template and uses it once Manifest is published.

Category details: do these yourself

Sidekick couldn't choose a product's category or tick its details in our tests. It tells you so and gives you the steps.

Sidekick replying that it can't add category details from here, with the steps to do it
1: Sidekick's answer. The steps take about a minute; see Product details with no setup.

Ask Sidekick to check your store

Sidekick can also look through your products and tell you what's missing. Good before you launch:

Shopify admin

Which of my active products have no Product subtitle, no category, or fewer than three photos? List them.

Shopify admin

List every product that has a badge: tag, and the badge each one shows.
